what would be the steps to starting a small childrens retail store?

i live in what most would call a small town, truth is, its actually largerthan expected. i have 2 children and both are boys and were preemies. now i had to drive 45 min to the nearest city to buy maternity clothes and clothes for my preemies. but to my surprise not even that city had a whole lot of retail location to buy preemie item and for boys at that! so i have decided that i want to open on up here in my location but am totally lost at where to even begin!

i need help big time……any ideas or facts would be nice!

First off — do some research.

If you have a physical store — meaning you will have a lease or monthly rent to pay, utilities to pay, inventory — are there enough preemie babies in your town to sustain the business?

Or are you better off selling your items online where you have a wider market? If online, then you need to learn about creating a website, taking pictures of the products, thinking of packaging design, learning how to accept payments (credit card payments, especially), inventory management, shipping, etc.

Other questions to ask

- What are your resources? How much do you have to invest in this business?
- Where will you get the capital?
- Where will you get your inventory?

You may want to speak to your local SBA office, or SBDC which provides FREE advice and assistance to small business owners. It may be helpful to bounce off your ideas and help you think through your plans
